Vodou and the loas
AGOWE  /   St. Ulrich
Master of the Seas, Agowe, also known as Agouet Aroyo, is
the first child in the second series of offspring of Damballah
with the Upper Waters. Admiral' Agowe is captain and
protector of ships on the sea.

Agowe is the Lord of the Seas. In Greek and Roman
mythology, the Lord of the Sea is represented by Poseidon
and Neptune.

Agowe sired a daughter with Miryame, an Ethiopian woman.
The daughter, named Imanoue, was captured by the Egyptians
and sacrificed to their god, Taurus. The name Imanoue was
inscribed on Agowe’s boat to immortalize the memory of her
name.

Agowe also sired a daughter, Ursule, with Erzuli Freda. In a
paradox for the Loa, Ursule drowned in the ocean, a death
caused by Ayida Wedo the Mermaid La Siren, wife of Agowe
and the rival of Erzuli Freda.

Agowe's ritual boat may be suspended from the temple
rafters. The altar offerings to this Loa have nautical and marine
themes. Images of St. Ulrich (holding a fish) are linked with
Agowe.
