Vodou and the loas
Legba / St. Peter
Just as St. Peter has the keys to Heaven’s Doors, Papa
Legba, or Atibon Legba is the Loa invoked by the houngan to
open the Gate to the Loas. The houngan can then
communicate with the Loa for the particular ceremony.
Legba is the sixth and last child of Damballah with Aida
Wedo, the first consort
The equivalent of Legba in Greek mythology would be
Hermes, and Janus in Roman mythology.
In the Petro group, Legba is known as Kalfou, Lord of the
Crossroads. The colors of Legba are red and white. The
colors of Kalfou are black and white. The symbols associated
with Legba are keys, walking sticks, crutches (St. Lazarus)
and mirrors. Other symbols include a pipe hung on a tree or a
doorway.
